About Altura Studio

Altura Studio

People say to me all the time: “You're so lucky. You get to go to weddings all the time." They're right. We are lucky. We get to be among people having a great time, looking and feeling their best and participating in what is often the most important day in someone's life.

Here’s the other thing we are lucky to see: the terrific style and creativity that our clients bring to their celebrations. If there is one thing we’ve learned while photographing weddings, it is that a wedding doesn’t have to be expensive to be lovely. We dedicate our blog to sharing the terrific ideas that we’ve seen before and will see this coming season, with a focus on ideas that are simple, elegant and stylish.

Every image in this blog is shot by us at events we've photographed. So, we say "thank you" to our clients who have shared their warmth and happiness with us.

UPDATED: Larissa and John, November 28th at the Beach

The fact that it was cold and foggy outside made John and Larissa’s wedding celebration in Cannon Beach feel especially cozy. The small, wood-paneled church made a lovely setting for the ceremony, which was officiated by a family friend. Larissa was a beautiful & glowing bride and John the mellowest groom ever.

After the ceremony, our plan was to spend some time on the beach for photos with just John and Larissa. I feared the crazy wind and icy temps would throw a wrench in the plan. But no, these two were totally game. The tides had changed the beach access making John and Larissa wade across a little stream to get to the sand. I’m so glad they had the spirit to do this because the photos from this time are just wonderful.

Congrats to you both on your wedding. Thanks for having us along on such a sweet, fun and loving day. And thanks to you, Rob, for being the awesome photographer you are. Well done!

mmmmmm, cupcakes!

We met Allison Kelleher on Sunday at event attended by some wedding industry folks. I tell you, there are two words I’m mesmerized by. One is “shoes” and the other is “cupcakes”. She introduced herself as “Cupcake Mama” and with that, she had my full attention.

I’ve had her yummies at a wedding and feel fully qualified to rave. If I was having a wedding or a party, I can see the advantage of having cupcakes instead of the big cake. Everyone can have the flavor (or color) they want, it’s a decent serving size (if you hold only one at a time, no-one can tell that you’ve already eaten 4 others….) and easier to serve and clean up.

Check out her website, or give her a ring at 503.287.7792

UPDATED: Alison & John, The Old Church in Sellwood

What a sweet and charming wedding this was. Alison and John married at dusk in the teeny tiny Old Church in Sellwood and then after celebrated with friends and family upstairs at Kell’s. Since Alison is an event planner herself, when it came time to consider her own wedding, she aimed for something small, simple and sweet. When they talked with us about what they were imagining photo-wise, the phrase “low key” came up a couple of times. What a refreshing change it was for us to be around such a relaxed and happy couple on wedding day.

My favorite photos from this day are the photos of Alison and John together alone, before their friends and family arrived. Besides being drop-dead gorgeous, Alison had the added beauty of being totally relaxed and completely in the moment with John.

UPDATED: Ann and Brad, October 18, 2008

Ann and Brad at The Viewpoint Inn

It’s so great when worlds collide and the circles in life overlap. One of the best things about photographing Ann and Brad’s beautiful wedding was that Ann is a friend of mine and we used to work at the same company. It was a delightful surprise to hear from her that we’d be the ones who would get to photograph her wedding to Brad in the late fall at The Viewpoint Inn.

Besides being an overall cool person, Ann is a talented designer. As is Brad. I assumed, rightly, that their wedding would be a gorgeous event. But what I hadn’t figured in advance, was that somehow Ann and Brad had managed to get the trees, the flowers and even the skies to coordinate themselves into this beautiful celebration.

Thanks, Ann and Brad for having us along on your day. John and I are crazy about the images. As I’m sitting at my computer, the palette is so lovely I want to lick the screen.

UPDATED: Tanya & Dan September 13, 2008

Wow, wow, WOW! We just received these photos from our associate photographer, Robert, who photographed Tanya and Dan’s incredible wedding at Shemanski Fountain in Portland’s north park blocks. When we first met with Tanya and Dan, I was impressed by their charm and vivacious personalities, but as we talked more about their plans, I realized their wedding would be anything but ordinary.

Many couples would hope for a day like Tanya and Dan’s. Perfect weather, golden autumn light, a killer setting, good friends all around. However, it’s really something special when your recessional includes “The Lions of Batucada”! After the “i dos”, Dan and Tanya led off a crazy, colorful Samba parade to their reception, where Tanya actually joined the emsemble for an impromptu performance. It’s just fantastic.

Congratulations to you both, Dan and Tanya. It was hard just to pick a few favorites here. (And a big thank-you Robert, for being your usual crazily talented and wonderful self). click here for a little slideshow of our favorites.

UPDATED: Angela & Jeremy, Saturday Sept 13th

Best wedding dogs ever! Angela and Jeremy had their two little Boston terriers as wedding attendants (although I don’t think they got to attend the reception.) ohmygosh, they were adorable. Small, too. I was considering putting one in my camera bag, but then thought better of that idea.

Jeremy and Angela are from Colorado, but apparently Timberline figured large in their developing relationship. The lodge was one of their first trips together and they celebrated this fact by making Timberline Lodge the spot for their destination wedding. The day was especially pretty, warm and summery with the kind of golden light that only happens in September. Won’t it be great that Angela and Jeremy can return here years in the future and look back on a perfect day?

 Congratulations to you both!

Sneak peek: Amy & Jon, September 6th, 2008

Some of our favorites

Amy is the most easygoing bride I have ever met. And that’s amazing, given that this couple and their wedding planner pulled this gorgeous wedding together in only about 8 weeks. She and her husband Jon are the sweetest, mellowest, kindest couple. Everything was beautiful and relaxed at the setting, which was Jon’s family home. They were surrounded by family and friends in the warm autumn light of a September afternoon. Here’s our idea for an album for Jon and Amy.

UPDATED: Suzette and Scott, Aug 23, 2008

Imagine if Portland’s largest outdoor festival was being held on the front porch of your wedding venue? Suzette explained that we should probably rethink heading to the Waterfront for photos after the ceremony since 25 GAZILLION PEOPLE would already be there for the Luis Palau celebration. But we needn’t have worried, since everything went off perfectly. I suppose that If you’re going to have your wedding surrounded by hoards of people, it’s good that they are all polite, well-dressed, religious enthusiasts.

The wedding was sweet and lovely. The plaza below the World Trade Center was an oasis of cool and calm for the ceremony and the upstairs venue always has the yummiest light. Here’s a couple of our faves and a little slide show .

UPDATED: Jennifer & Andy, August 31, 2008

file resized to 490

I can’t recall any wedding that was more fun to shoot, or one where I was happier with the images than Jennifer and Andy’s. The whole day was epic and amazing and a blast to photograph. In many ways, it was like a good movie.  Great backdrops and plot twists, a lovely leading lady and a devilishly handsome groom, plus interesting characters, and….. you guessed it: unexpected rain!

We were super psyched when we heard that Jennifer and Andy were hoping for some “Annie Leibovitz” style portraits at Hotel Monaco. I’m sure that Annie gets a little more than 15 minutes, though. My favs, however are the individual portraits of Jennifer and Andy. And you can’t see it here, but in the gallery (up in a couple weeks) you can see how that blue painting makes an incredible background for some of the portraits. It was a whole lot of fun– and lots different than our usual portrait technique.

The wedding was luscious and cozy. It was pouring at this point, so it felt wonderful to be warm and dry inside. I hadn’t been to this church before, but I was groovin’ on how the red carpet and rich wood tones would blend with the red walls from our portrait session.

And finally, the most delightful part of the day was Jennifer and Andy taking a little stroll before they headed into their reception. A few raindrops fell, but nothing too terrible. (Is there a better prop than a black umbrella?) They looked so happy and the light was doing all our favorite things. Yummy.

Thanks for getting married here in town you two! I know you’re still on your world adventure honeymoon. I hope you check here first for a preview of all that we are preparing for you. Click here for a slideshow of our favorites.

UPDATE: Here is a link to all the photos from the day.  And here’s a link to suggested album designs we’ve just finished for you. One is wow. The other is wow-plus-plus. (That’s the technical name for it….). On Friday or so, we’ll post the link to all the images from the day.
